Stock photo.... BOI
If you recall my story of the guy whose Nissan Cube needs a new engine... Well he went a bought a 2004 A4 Avant 3.0 with a stick(!) yesterday. Black on black, 100k miles, in damn nice shape. Picked it up for peanuts, because of course he did.
I get to drive it next week, partially excited. Also the same guy who let me drive his manual Forester XT a while back. He likes buying things.

Or, he picked it up for peanuts because everyone is afraid of buying a B5/B6 VAG product at 10+ years old?

I still kick my wife for dawdling so long...a few years back my neighbors had an A4 manual that had an issue (water pump, no overheat) that they offered to give me, since they knew I like to tinker on cars. By the time I convinced her it was worth the effort, they donated it to charity.

A friend from college had that exact car, and I mean exact. Ok it was a 2003 but it was an A4 Avant, same engine, transmission, interior and exterior color. It was a great car, and basically the reason I got a BMW wagon a few years later.
If it was actually an ‘03, I’d ask for the VIN because how many can there be?

In terms of reliability, the A4 of this generation makes my V70R look like a Corolla.

Those were the early days. Now I know enough that if I spot a good deal, and it’s something I like, I just pick it up. She also knows well enough that I won’t take something on that I can’t fix or at least break even on.
